At the University of Chicago, we believe in the transformative power of data science to reshape society. The Crime Lab and Education Lab are dedicated to tackling complex, real-world issues related to public safety, education, and social justice through rigorous research. Our mission is to use data and machine learning to design, test, and scale programs that can genuinely improve lives and communities. We're looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Associate Data Scientist to join us in our efforts to drive meaningful change through data-driven solutions.
About the Role:
As an Associate Data Scientist, you will be at the intersection of data science and public policy, applying your skills in machine learning to help solve real-world challenges. From data preparation and cleaning to developing and evaluating predictive models, you'll play an essential role in transforming how cities address complex social issues, such as gun violence, education inequity, and criminal justice reform.
You will work closely with leading researchers and policymakers, contributing to impactful projects and initiatives. This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to transition into public policy research, with hands-on experience in applying machine learning to improve social outcomes.
What You'll Do:
- Develop Data Pipelines: Build and maintain reproducible and efficient data processing pipelines, ensuring clean, structured data ready for analysis and modeling.
- Machine Learning & Statistical Analysis: Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of machine learning models and statistical methods for policy applications.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work with PhD-level researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to create models that provide actionable insights and inform data-driven policy decisions.
- Research & Reporting: Draft memos, summaries, and reports to present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring the practical impact of the work is communicated effectively.
- Data Analysis: Analyze large datasets, identifying trends and patterns to inform ongoing research and program evaluations.
- Support Research Projects: Assist in carrying out randomized control trials and other evaluations aimed at improving public policy in education, safety, and justice.
What We’re Looking For:
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, or a related field.
- Experience: Less than 2 years of work experience in data science, machine learning, or a related discipline.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Python or R for statistical analysis and machine learning.
- Familiarity with machine learning algorithms, data processing, and model evaluation.
- Experience in building reproducible and maintainable code.
- Communication Skills: Ability to clearly present complex findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Teamwork & Independence: A resourceful and collaborative mindset, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Critical Thinking & Attention to Detail: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify patterns and draw conclusions from large datasets.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of program evaluation and causal inference techniques.
- Experience working with large datasets and managing data for research purposes.
- A passion for social impact and applying data science to solve real-world problems.
Why Join Us?
- Impactful Work: The work you do will directly contribute to addressing major social challenges and improving outcomes for communities across the country.
- Collaborative Environment: Work alongside leading experts in machine learning, economics, and public policy to drive meaningful change.
- Professional Development: If you’re interested in pursuing a PhD, this position offers excellent experience working with top-tier researchers.
- Compensation & Benefits: The University of Chicago offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, paid time off, and retirement savings plans.
