The Role:

As a Machine Learning Scientist in PayPal’s Global Analytics & Data Science (GADS) team, you’ll have the opportunity to work with massive datasets and apply cutting-edge machine learning techniques to enhance our products and services. You’ll tackle complex, real-world problems, improving customer experiences and driving impactful results. What You’ll Do:

  • Design and develop advanced machine learning models (neural networks, tree-based models, etc.) to solve key business problems at scale.
  • Optimize and fine-tune machine learning models to improve their performance and scalability, ensuring they deliver top-tier results in production environments.
  • Leverage PayPal’s vast datasets to extract valuable insights and create predictive models that enhance customer interactions, fraud detection, and product performance.
  • Stay ahead of the curve by keeping up-to-date with the latest advancements in machine learning and AI technologies.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including data engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to experiment and deliver innovative ML solutions.
  • Visualize and communicate complex technical results and insights to non-technical stakeholders in an easily digestible, impactful way.
  • Play a key role in shaping PayPal’s data-driven decisions and driving strategic initiatives across the organization.

What We’re Looking For:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Operations Research, etc.), or MS with 2-4 years of experience.
  • Expertise in machine learning algorithms (supervised/unsupervised learning, deep learning, decision trees, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Python, Java, or similar programming languages, with hands-on experience using machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn).
  • Strong experience with data manipulation and analysis using tools like Pandas, NumPy, or SQL (BigQuery/Hive/Spark).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) and distributed computing environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, able to work both independently and within collaborative teams.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with graph algorithms and graph-based machine learning.
  • Familiarity with Reinforcement Learning, Causal Inference, or Self-supervised learning techniques.
  • Experience in anomaly detection, incremental learning, or synthetic data generation.
  • Knowledge or experience in the risk domain (fraud detection, financial risk modeling) is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • U.S. National Pay Range: $72,700 to $176,000, plus potential bonuses, equity, and comprehensive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, 401k matching, etc.)
